PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydrogen storage alloy material for a hydrogen storage alloy electrode in an alkaline storage battery, which is excellent in a high efficiency discharge characteristic at a low temperature, by crushing a thin band type hydrogen storage alloy prepared by solidifying a molten alloy by means of a rolling method into grains with a specific grain size. SOLUTION: Hydrogen storage alloy powder, which is provided by crushing a thin band type hydrogen storage alloy prepared by solidifying a molten alloy by means of a rolling method and satisfies all the following expression, is used for a hydrogen storage material; (1) r/t<=0.5; (2) 60<=t<=180; (3) 30<=r<=90 [(r) represents a mean grain diameter (μm) for the hydrogen storage alloy powder; (t) represents a mean thickness (μm) for the thin band type hydrogen storage alloy]. A thin band type hydrogen storage alloy heat-treated (annealed) in inert gas or in a vacuum may be used. In this way, dispersion in a crystal grain side in the thickness direction of the thin band is reduced, so that disintegration to powder in a charge-discharge cycle can be suppressed.
